What is your opinion of Blackest Night? I'm thinking about picking it up.
Sorry, I’m not used to getting messages so I didn’t see this.
Anyway, Blackest Night. You know how events seem bigger when you watch them come out month after month? The excitement and anticipation are high… the effect is felt all over the DC titles.
That said, I am answering this in the point of view of a monthly reader, not as a TPB reader. It was one of the most exciting and well-organized events I’ve read. To experience Blackest Night, you can’t just read the main Blackest Night hardcover… to enjoy it at its best, you have to at least read BN Green Lantern and BN Green Lantern Corps.
Of course you can still read the main event, but so many good stories are lost between the pages. Luckily the stories can be read elsewhere:
BN Green Lantern: Hal Jordan’s call to arms
BN Green Lantern Corps: The war on Oa.
BN: Tales of the Corps: To know more about the other Lantern Corps.
Black Lantern Corps: Blackest Night’s effects on Batman, Superman, Titans, JSA, Flash and Wonder Woman.
BN: Rise of the Black Lanterns: more dead heroes (the Question, Jonah Hex….)
And still, there are other Black Lantern stories that you can read only in their respective titles like Teen Titans, JLA, Booster Gold, Superboy (Adventure Comics), the Outsiders, Superman/Batman. Yeah, the dead rose everywhere.
I just put those down for reference, but you can start off with the main book and it will still be a complete read (it’s just cooler as an event). Just a warning though, like all of Geoff John’s stories, it tends to be cheesy by the end.
